There is breaking news in the case of a Dawson Creek woman who was murdered in Mexico in 2023.
After a review of the case by a Mexican magistrate, the not-guilty verdict in Kiara Agnew’s murder trial has been overturned.
Global Affairs Canada has reached out to Kiara’s family to tell them that Ryan Friesen is now considered guilty in connection to the 23 year old’s death.
Agnew was beaten to death at a five-star resort in Playa del Carmen, Mexico, on March 3, 2023.
Her boyfriend Ryan, was found asleep beside her body in a resort laundry room, with swollen fists, bruises, and feet, and covered in blood.

Ryan was charged with killing Kiara and found not guilty in September 2024 after a judge-only trial in Mexico.
When asked about Kiara’s murder, the state Deputy Prosecutor, Aroshi Lugo Arana, responded that she believes it was established beyond any reasonable doubt that the crime was committed by Ryan.
With Friesen now declared convicted, his lawyer has filed an appeal. It’s not clear if Friesen will remain in Dawson Creek or will surrender to Mexican authorities while the appeal process continues.
CJDC TV News reached out to the RCMP to ask if Friesen has been arrested. Dawson Creek police said they have yet to be notified by authorities concerning Friesen.
