A well-known Dawson Creek man with a long and violent criminal history, is back behind bars. John Ominiyak is facing new charges of aggravated assault and kidnapping.
Dawson Creek RCMP say he was arrested in the Peace River area of Alberta at the beginning of April.
Mounties allege a man was seriously assaulted near Rolla. The victim suffered significant injuries but still manage to wander across the Alberta border. The victim found an abandoned vehicle to hide in for the night.
The next day, the victim was found by a tow truck driver. Among his injuries, CJDC TV News has learned, he had the word ‘rat’ allegedly carved into his chest from a knife.
An officer from the Spirit River RCMP detachment took the victim to the Dawson Creek hospital to be treated for his injuries.
A source tells CJDC TV News that someone had attempted to cut the victims fingers off a week before he was found in the abandoned vehicle. There is nothing to indicate that the two alleged assaults are related.
The investigation into the alleged assault and kidnapping has been going on for over a year, according to police.
The 42-year-old Ominiyak was wanted on outstanding warrants out of Dawson Creek at the time of his arrest.
Ominiyak was featured on the CBC’s Fifth Estate episode that investigated people that had gone missing or were murdered in Dawson Creek.
He denied any involvement in the murder of Darylyn Supernant, Tina Nellis and Roy Islay. Ominiyak said at the time, that there is no proof of him doing any of that. He added, “I have nothing to do with anyone’s death.”
He remains in police custody pending his next scheduled court appearance on April 28.
