The city of Dawson Creek made a new city flag official at Monday’s council meeting.
The flag features the silhouette of the Alberta Pool grain elevator in yellow, overlaid by the Mile 0 signpost in blue.

Council was presented with three options for the city flag. One option was to maintain and formalize the existing flag. The other two featured the same updated design, but with different shades of blue and yellow.
Not all councillors supported moving forward with the new design, which uses the colours of the old flag.
Councillor Charlie Parslow said he prefers the old flag, calling the new design “silly” and “naked.” “I find that the podium on the flag is meaningless,” he said.
Parslow said the Mile 0 signpost on the old flag is easier to recognize, a view shared by Councillor Gregg Apolonio.

However, Councillor Jerimy Earl supported the new design, describing it as less busy and containing more historical elements. The new flag passed in a 5-2 vote.
Despite Monday’s decision, the design was first approved by the city in 2008. At the time, a committee was tasked with updating the flag and having it registered through Heraldic Registry for Dawson Creek’s 50th anniversary. However, it was never officially adopted in the city’s flag policy and was never flown.
