The Dawson Creek Kodiaks Hockey School gets underway on Monday, and for the first time in five years, the camp will be hosted in Dawson Creek.

“This upcoming week is our annual Kodiaks Hockey School. So, there’s 120 plus kids in it this year, and we’re really excited,” said General Manager Colby Wagar.

The camp features two on-ice sessions each day, along with off-ice instructions, conditioning and skill lessons. Players will also participate in team building activities, with lunch provided daily.

“The city did a great job and got the ice in a little early for us this year, and we’re able to host it here in town,” said Wagar.

In the last few years, the camp was held in Tumbler Ridge, but Wagar said bringing it back to Dawson Creek does a lot for the community.

“it’s 120 kids and all of them have family members. They come in, they’re camping, and they’re spending their money in town,” said the general manager.

Wagar added that most of the Kodiaks players will be present to help out. He said playing for the team comes with a responsibility to give back to the community.

Wagar said the camp, opened to kids of age 6 to 17, filled up quickly after registration opened. It will run from August 18 to 22.
