The Dawson Creek and District Hospital Foundation says a recent donation from a local charitable group will help create a more welcoming space for patients and their families in the South Peace.
The Foundation says the contribution from the Dawson Creek Firefighters Charitable Society will go toward building a furnished room at the Dawson Creek & District Hospital.
The space is intended to offer comfort, connection, and a place for families to step away during difficult moments while a loved one is receiving care.
According to the Foundation, the project was inspired by the experience of one of the firefighters’ own members, who was injured during a rescue.
After visiting him in hospital, members of the society recognized the importance of having a dedicated space where families can gather and support one another during stressful times.
Captain Gary Kerbrat, with the charitable society, says the idea came from firsthand experience.
“Due to his accident in October and visiting him in VGH, we saw the need for and importance of a room like this to allow families to spend quality time together,” Kerbrat said. “This room allows families to decompress and recharge while dealing with whatever their situation may be.”
Executive Director Allie Macam says the donation reflects the firefighters’ ongoing commitment to community care, both on and off the job.
“We are incredibly grateful for the DC Firefighters Charitable Society’s generosity and compassion,” Macam said. “This meaningful contribution will help create a comforting and welcoming space for patients and families during some of life’s most difficult moments.”
The Foundation says it continues to work with donors, businesses, and community partners to improve patient experiences and support health care across the South Peace region.
