Dawson Creek Dance Co. brings message of hope with new production IMPACT

Dawson Creek Dance Co. is inviting residents to its second major production, titled IMPACT, involving 32 dancers between the ages of eight and 18.

The dance show is co-directed by owners Jean Mackenzie and Melanie Reitsma. Mackenzie says the goal is to communicate that “one small act can make a huge difference and create an impact.”

The story follows an individual who hasn’t received enough love in their life. As the show progresses, the person experiences small acts of kindness to fill her “bucket,” leading to self-confidence and the drive to help others.

The dancers were directly involved in the creative process, deciding what type of impact they want to create. “The audience can expect a beautifully developed storyline by the students themselves. This is what’s unique about our story,” Mackenzie said.

The show will be held at Unchagah Hall in Dawson Creek, a unique venue that allows for more creative freedom. “It’s not your regular dance show. It’s a seamless experience, like a movie, with unique lighting and props that you can only get at that location,” Reitsma said.

IMPACT is the studio’s second major production, after Doorways was presented during the 2024 creative season. The 2025 season was competitive, meaning there were no major productions.

The co-directors say they’ve seen growing confidence in each dancer since Doorways was assembled. “The way they think about dancing has shifted. They want to tell a story and want to have a reason for moving the way they move,” Reitsma said.

The show will take place at Unchagah Hall from May 7 to 9. Tickets are available online for $35 on the Ticket in the Peace website.

The co-directors say everyone can get something out of the show, whether they enjoy dancing or not. They say they want the audience to experience a sense of hope and be inspired to believe.

“We see these kids as kind of our own. I think we refer to them as our kids,” Reitsma said laughing. “We’re just so proud of the effort and commitment they have put in.”
