Dawson Creek council weighs future of BC Transit during first 2026 draft budget review

Dawson Creek City Council reviewed transit funding as part of the first draft of the 2026 budget at its latest council meeting.

According to the draft budget, council must decide whether to continue or terminate the city’s contract with BC Transit before adopting the 2026 budget in March.

The report says BC Transit can continue to be funded in 2026 under the current budget framework. Staff noted that the cost of the contract is rising, but not enough to force a cut.

The draft budget shows BC Transit contract costs increased by about $34,000 in 2025, and next year’s net cost is project to be roughly $430,000.

However, staff said removing BC Transit entirely would lower the proposed tax rate by about 1.87 percent.

The city is also proposing permanent annual funding of $165,000 to Step Up ‘N’ Ride, saying it would ensure continued transportation for vulnerable residents.

Council raised concerns in November over the rising costs and the effectiveness of the BC Transit system.

Mayor Darcy Dober said at the time, it’s council’s job to explore every avenue when allocating budget.

Some residents were against potentially removing BC Transit services completely, arguing the vast majority of people aren’t eligible for Step Up ‘N’ Ride.

The city will review a second draft budget at the end of January.
