DAWSON CREEK, B.C. - Northern Lights enthusiasts in Dawson Creek may have another reason to look up this winter.
A new study examining the best places in Canada to view the Aurora Borealis highlights several western Canadian communities as prime destinations for catching the natural phenomenon, thanks to dark skies and favourable viewing conditions.
The research, conducted by Spin Casino analyzed Canadian cities based on their distance from the North Pole, sky darkness, overall night sky brightness, and the percentage of clear skies throughout the year.
The report noted that communities across northern Alberta, Saskatchewan and northeastern B.C. are well-positioned for aurora viewing because of their northern latitude and relatively low levels of light pollution.
Dawson Creek is rated as Canada’s fifth best city to see the northern lights.
While Iqaluit, Nunavut topped the national rankings, it was followed by Cold Lake, Alberta, Meadow Lake, Saskatchewan and Yellowknife, Northwest Territories.
Dawson Creek residents are no strangers to displays of the Northern Lights, particularly during the fall and winter months when longer nights and colder temperatures improve viewing opportunities.
Areas outside city limits, where artificial lighting is limited, can offer some of the best chances to see the colourful skies.
The study found clear skies and dark night conditions are among the most important factors for successful aurora viewing.
Researchers used the Bortle Scale, which measures light pollution, along with Sky Quality Meter data to compare locations across the country.
Edmonton also made the list despite its higher levels of urban light pollution because of its large number of clear nights each year.
Experts say solar activity remains elevated, giving Canadians increased opportunities to witness the Aurora Borealis when weather conditions cooperate.
For residents of Dawson Creek and the Peace Region, that could mean more chances to catch one of nature’s most spectacular displays this winter.
