The Crystal Cup Pond Hockey Challenge is back this weekend. Fifty-one teams are set to participate in one of Western Canada’s biggest pond hockey tournaments.

The tournament will take place on Charlie Lake, north of Fort St. John. Games begin Friday night and run until Sunday.

Organizer Neil Evans says volunteers have been out on the lake every day this week in cold weather to prepare the ice. He says the ice conditions are fantastic this year.

“Despite all the rumors, ice conditions are even better than in prior years,” Evans says, adding there is well over two feet of ice.

Evans says everyone is welcome and encourages people not to be scared of the cold.

He adds the event is not only hockey on a lake but also a great opportunity for families to come out and have fun.

Families can enjoy a public rink on the lake with a puck-free area.

Hockey influencer and stickhandling specialist Pavel Barber will also be making an appearance.

The Sid Davis Youth Memorial will also take place this weekend. The full game schedule can be found on the Crystal Cup website.
