Council reviewing plan for proposed aquatic facility in Fort St. John

FSJ Council

The process of building a new aquatic facility in Fort St. John has taken another step forward at the latest city council meeting.

Council reviewed the project charter, a document that would officially start the project and explain the planning process.

Council received the report for information, meaning no decision has been made yet.

The charter details what would be included in the two phases of the project. Phase one would include four pools with different features, an indoor fieldhouse, and a shared space. Phase two would feature two gymnasiums and a full-size outdoor synthetic turf field.

The charter also outlines a timeline for the project. That process has already begun, as the city is currently developing design concepts, estimating costs, and engaging with the public.

That process is expected to be finalized in the summer. Afterwards, the project would require public approval, possibly through a referendum, before construction could begin in Spring 2027.

The report highlights major risks attached to the project, including rising construction costs and public opposition. It also shows taxes could increase by around $40 per household.
