Residents in Dawson Creek are being urged to stay alert after a reported cougar sighting in a popular local recreation area.
The City of Dawson Creek says it received a report of a cougar in Chamberlain Nature Park on June 24.
While sightings are considered uncommon, officials say the presence of the animal is a reminder that potentially dangerous wildlife can move through the area.
City officials are advising people to use caution when visiting the park, especially during early morning or evening hours when wildlife activity can increase.
In the event of an encounter, residents are reminded to remain calm, avoid running, and keep children and pets close. The city also recommends making yourself appear larger, maintaining eye contact, and slowly backing away to give the animal space.
Officials say if a cougar shows aggressive behaviour, people should make noise, wave their arms, and be prepared to defend themselves.
The city is also encouraging trail users to travel in groups where possible, keep dogs on leash, and stay alert by avoiding distractions such as headphones.
According to the city, updates are typically shared for cougar and bear sightings due to their potential risk to public safety, while more commonly seen wildlife like deer or moose are not usually reported unless there is an unusual concern.
