The City of Fort St. John is continuing its effort to bring a new aquatic center to the community.
Mayor Lilia Hansen announced on Wednesday a new proposed location to build the aquatic facility in the Parkwood Southlands Development.
The city is considering Lot 1, located across from the Naache Commons development and Margaret “Ma” Murray Community School.
The site was chosen “for its convenient location, room for future growth, and ability to serve residents across the city.”
“We’ve heard from residents that a new aquatics facility is a priority, and this proposed location is a strong step toward making that vision a reality,” said Mayor Lilia Hansen.
The city said it has signed a Letter of Intent with XJ Evergreen Estates Corp. to take a closer look at the proposed site.
“We’re grateful to XJ Evergreen Estates Corp for their willingness to explore the potential donation of this land and for partnering with the city to support this important project,” said the mayor.
The city said it will continue to engage with the community for the planning and design of the future aquatic facility.
In August, the city took the lead from the Peace River Regional District to replace the pool.
The PRRD dissolved the Steering Committee responsible for building a new aquatic centre, after Fort St. John gave notice of its departure in July.
The North Peace Leisure Facility Replacement Steering Committee, which was operating since 2018, was a collaboration of the City of Fort St. John, the District of Taylor, and the PRRD.
By leaving the committee, the city said it wants “to take a more direct leadership role” in the project.
City officials said they are reviewing past materials and plan to finalize the project by summer 2026. Funding approvals are still pending, and construction is expected to begin in 2027.
