The City of Fort St. John has taken down a homeless encampment across the street from the Salvation Army on Friday.

City officials say the homeless camp was shut down because the city currently has shelter space available.

Some of the people living in the tents were banned from the Salvation Army shelter, but the city worked with BC Housing and the Salvation Army, to have those restrictions removed.

Residents were given 24-hour notice before the camp was dismantled. Police were on hand to ensure the safety of the operation.

Across BC, courts have upheld decision to close down encampments if there is available shelter space in city.

The city conducted a homeless count in 2023 , where they found 102 individuals experiencing homelessness.

The count also showed 37 per cent did not have a sufficient income to afford housing and 56 per cent were homeless for a year or more.
