City of Dawson Creek warns about flooding as ‘High-Stream Flow’ advisory in effect

Amidst wildfire season and the on-going drought situation in Northeast BC, the City of Dawson Creek is warning about potential flooding over the next few days.

“While the rain is helpful due to the recent dry weather, it could also lead to flooding in some areas, especially low-lying spots,” said Melissa Love, Communications and Engagement Manager with the city.

There is a ‘High-Stream Flow’ advisory in effect for the Peace Region. The province says river levels are rising or expected to rise rapidly, but that no major flooding is expected. Minor flooding in low-lying areas is possible.

Environment Canada is forecasting showers starting on Wednesday night, with up to 120 millimetres of rain expected in the Peace Region throught Saturday.

City crews are keeping a close eye on the situation and getting things ready in case there is a lot of water runoff. Residents are being encouraged to take steps to protect their property as well.

Even though rain is on the way, Dawson Creek and the surrounding area are still facing a Level 4 Drought — one of the most serious drought levels in B.C.

The long stretch of dry weather has made the ground hard and plants dry, which means the land can’t soak up water as well. As a result, there’s a higher chance of flooding when the rain arrives.

When the ground is hard and dry, rainwater runs off quickly instead of soaking in. This can lead to flash flooding, erosion, and put pressure on city drainage systems. A single rainfall won’t end a drought, but it can still cause serious problems if communities aren’t ready for it.

The city is encouraging everyone to take steps to protect their homes, look out for their neighbours, and stay aware of any changes in the weather.

Free sandbags are available at the city’s Yard Waste Collection Site at 949 99 Avenue.
