City of Dawson Creek to relocate services during asbestos abatement at City Hall

The City of Dawson Creek says City Hall services will temporarily move to alternate locations this summer as planned asbestos abatement work gets underway inside the building.

The city says WorkSafeBC recently flagged concerns during an inspection tied to a project at City Hall.

Follow-up testing confirmed asbestos contamination in limited areas between the roof and ceiling space.

Officials say the affected area has remained undisturbed and that City Hall remains safe for staff and the public.

The abatement work must be completed within the year and will be carried out by qualified professionals with strict containment and safety measures in place.

Once finished, the city says it will also move ahead with electrical and IT upgrades to improve long-term operations.

To allow the work to proceed, services will be relocated in phases:

  • Recreation Services, along with the Culture & Recreation and Emergency Management departments, will move to the Kin Arena meeting room starting June 22.
  • Core City Hall departments, including finance, development services and administration, will relocate to space inside the Dawson Creek Mall beginning July 20.
  • Council meetings will temporarily move to the Peace River Regional District boardroom starting July 27, with the final meeting at City Hall set for July 13.

All municipal services, including permits, taxation, utility payments and business licensing, will continue during the relocation period.

The city says funding for the project is included in the 2026 capital budget and will not increase property taxes.

Services are expected to return to City Hall in early 2027.
