Rail Safety Week takes place from September 15 to 21, and many communities in the Peace Region are supporting the movement.
Canadian National Railway (CN) said rail safety is a shared responsibility by the public.
“When everyone looks out for those in their communities, we can help eliminate railroad crossing and trespassing accidents,” said the rail company.
CN pushes people to be “rail smart” by following these tips:
- Stop at a safe distance from tracks and crossings.
- Look both ways to ensure trains are not approaching.
- Listen for approaching trains.
“Rail safety isn’t just about big moments, it’s about the small, safe choices we make each day,” said Shawn Will, chief of police and chief security officer, CN.
Communities like the District of Taylor, the Village of Pouce Coupe, and Fort Nelson First Nation support Rail Safety Week, according to CN.
The province said there has been 40 deaths caused by railway accidents in BC, between 2020 and 2025.
“Railway crossing and trespassing incidents can have catastrophic, life-changing results,” said Dr. Jatinder Baidwan, chief coroner, BC Coroners Service.
