The City of Fort St. John has announced that the fireworks show on Canada Day has been cancelled once again.

The city’s Communication Manager said the move is to protect residents during wildfire season.

Ryan Harvey said that council made the decision due to the recent warm weather and on-going drought conditions.

The city said it has become difficult to plan for Canada Day firework displays over the past few years.

Harvey also pointed the open fire ban that was implemented recently by the BC Wildfire Service. Category 2 and 3 open burning, including the use of fireworks, are prohibited in the Peace Forest Districts (Dawson Creek, Fort St. John and Fort Nelson Zones).

It’s the second year in a row that the fireworks display on Canada Day have been cancelled in Fort St. John.
