The fall semester is just around the corner at Northern Lights College, and new students at the Dawson Creek campus have a busy week ahead.

The first day of the fall term is September 2, and classes get underway the next day.

On Orientation Day, Laurie Webb, the campus student experience officer, said she wants students to have the most successful start possible.

“It’s amazing because we see them as brand-new students, fresh. They are most likely a bit nervous or a little scared,” said Webb.

On their first day, Webb said students will visit their program’s classrooms, learn about all the different services and supports offered, and tour the campus.

She added that it is important to go over the expectations that come with making the transition from high school to college.

Sydney Feschuk is enrolled in the Arts and Science program. She’s excited to be able to study close to home. “It’s nice being home. I can be next to my family,” she said.

The campus is welcoming 214 domestic students and 45 international students this year. That’s slightly below the 284 total students enrolled during the fall semester a year ago.

Newcomers have already begun settling into student housing. Campus Administrator Linda Mueller said move-in dates were expanded this year to accommodate more students.

She said students began moving into their new homes at the start of the week and will continue until Friday.

Mueller noted that students should apply for winter semester housing now, as it fills up quickly.

On September 4, the college is hosting Welcome Fest, featuring free food and drinks, games, and more.

Webb said the event will include a performance from the rodeo team and a beer garden for the first time in years.

Community members are also invited to the school cafeteria for weekly lunches prepared by student in the cook training program, as well as a food tasting event on September 17.

The college also offers sports drop-ins five days a week for students wanting to get active.
