DAWSON CREEK, B.C. – Residents using a popular section of the Dawson Trail are being urged to stay alert after a mother black bear and her two cubs were reported near the trailhead by the trailer park close to 17th Street.
The sighting prompted a public reminder about bear safety, particularly in areas where people may encounter wildlife while walking, running or cycling.
According to the notice, trail users should stay aware of their surroundings, travel in groups when possible, keep children close and ensure dogs remain on a leash.
People are also advised to give bears plenty of space and never approach cubs.
Anyone who encounters a bear should remain calm, avoid running and slowly back away while giving the animal a clear escape route.
Officials also advise residents not to feed bears, noting it is illegal to feed dangerous wildlife.
If a bear behaves aggressively or poses a threat to public safety, residents can report it to the Conservation Officer Service’s Report All Poachers and Polluters (RAPP) line at 1-877-952-7277.
