Bear sightings prompt safety warning in Fort St. John for Fish Creek Community Forest

A wildlife alert in Fort St. John is urging residents to stay cautious after reports of bears in a popular recreation area.

The City of Fort St. John says bears have been spotted in the Fish Creek Community Forest, a well-used trail system on the edge of the city. Officials are reminding people to stay aware of their surroundings and take steps to avoid encounters.

Residents are being told to keep dogs on leash and to avoid approaching wildlife or getting close to feeding sites. Travelling in groups and making noise can also help prevent surprising animals.

The city says changes in a bear’s behaviour can be a sign you’re too close.

Officials are also offering safety advice in case of an encounter. People who come across a black bear are advised not to run, but instead speak calmly, appear larger, and slowly back away. In the case of a grizzly bear, the recommendation is to avoid eye contact and remain calm.

The guidance differs if an attack occurs, with experts advising people to fight back against a black bear, but to play dead if a grizzly bear makes contact.

The city is asking anyone heading into the area to use caution until further notice.
