FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. — Residents on the east side of Fort St. John are being warned to stay alert after reports of a bear in the area.

The City of Fort St. John says the animal was spotted near The Station, prompting a wildlife advisory for the surrounding neighbourhood.

Officials are urging people to take precautions, including keeping dogs on a leash and avoiding approaching or surprising wildlife.

They also recommend staying clear of any animal feeding sites and watching for signs of unusual behaviour, which could indicate the animal feels threatened.

The city says anyone encountering a black bear should remain calm, speak firmly, and slowly back away. If the animal becomes aggressive, people are advised to make themselves appear larger and, if necessary, throw objects to deter it.

Different advice applies for grizzly bears, where officials say people should avoid eye contact and not act aggressively.

Residents are being reminded that wildlife activity tends to increase at this time of year, and awareness is key to avoiding dangerous encounters.

There is no word yet on how long the advisory will remain in place.
