The Special Olympics BC Summer Games are coming to Prince George on Friday and Saturday.

It will be the first Summer Games in 8 years, and close to 900 athletes are expected to participate.

“We are so excited to watch Special Olympics BC athletes shine in Prince George, and open hearts and minds to their abilities,” says Michelle Cruickshank, SOBC Vice President of Sport.

The opening ceremonies will take place at 7:30 pm at the CN Centre on Thursday. The next morning, the action begins, and athletes will perform in 10 different events.

The competition includes 10-Pin Bowling, Basketball, Bocce, Golf, Powerlifting, Rhythmic Gymnastics, Soccer, Softball, Swimming, and Track and Field. To see the full event schedule, you can visit the Special Olympics BC website.

Prince George athlete Chase Caron says this event allows dedicated athletes with intellectual and developmental disabilities the chance to let their brilliance shine.

Organizers say the Special Olympics is often the first opportunity, for its athletes, to experience the joy of travelling and being part of a team.

46 communities across the province will be represented at the competition, and 81 athletes, coaches, and volunteers from Northeast BC will represent Region 8. Fort St. John Levi Fowler will participate in the Golf event, and Dawson Creek Steven Oliver will work as an event volunteer. Prince George has the most members in the region with 52.

It is also possible to make a donation in support of Special Olympics BC on the website.
