The BC Wildfire Service will assist the Northern Rockies Regional Airport in burning three piles of debris today.

The operation follows land clearing efforts aimed at reducing flammable fuels near the airport to improve aircraft safety.

Residents of Fort Nelson and surrounding areas, as well as travelers along Highway 97, may notice smoke in the vicinity, according to an information bulletin.

The BCWS says that pile burning will only proceed if conditions are favourable. Personnel will prepare, control, and monitor the burning process to ensure safety.

As part of on-going efforts to prevent wildfires, the BCWS continue to encourage residents to report any wildfires, unattended campfires, and open burning violations ahead of the upcoming wildfire season.
