The BC Wildfire Service is advising residents in the Fort Nelson area of a controlled burn scheduled for Tuesday, May 12.
The one-day prescribed burn will be conducted by the BC Wildfire Service and Northern Rockies Fire Rescue and will include two burn units.
The first is a 17-hectare area south of the Alaska Highway, east of Cordova Way. The second is a three-hectare area northeast of the Northern Rockies Regional Airport near the Fort Nelson Motocross Track.
The burn is dependent on weather and logistics or until the burn area is completed. The service says the prescribed burn is for cross-training and to mitigate roadside fuels hazards such as grasses and ladder fuels.
Preparations could begin Monday if conditions are suitable and could involve burning fuel around the perimeter of the burn units.
During the operation, residents could notice smoke along Highway 97, as well as emergency vehicles, fire personnel and other activity in the area.
