The provincial government says new rules are now in effect to make wildlife trapping more humane across British Columbia.
Under updated regulations to the Wildlife Act, the use of foot‑encapsulating traps, commonly known as ‘egg traps’ or ‘dog-proof traps’ are now restricted.
The traps must be solidly anchored and may only be used by licensed trappers or others legally authorized to trap wildlife.
The province says unanchored egg traps can cause serious injury and prolonged suffering, particularly for animals that may drag the traps after being caught.
Anchoring the traps is expected to reduce harm and allow animals to be located more quickly.
Licensed trappers will still be allowed to use egg traps, but only with the new safeguards in place.
Members of the public are not permitted to use them and are encouraged to rely on more humane options, such as live box traps, for dealing with nuisance wildlife in residential areas.
Unauthorized use of egg traps is an offence under provincial regulations and can result in fines or prosecution.
The government says it consulted with stakeholders and First Nations throughout 2025 and 2026 while developing the new rules, which are aimed at strengthening animal‑welfare standards in B.C.
