BC Hydro said it is exploring ways to repurpose the worker accommodation camp at the Site C dam near Fort St. John.

In March, CJDC-TV News reported the camp could be demolished and left in a landfill, sparking discussions on waste management and recycling.

BC Hydro said it has since shifted focus to finding parties interested in acquiring the 1,700-bed work facility.

The power supplier added that the facility has received a high level of interest from several organizations in recent months.

In July, Pomegranate Housing Consultancy pitched a proposal to the Peace River Regional District to transform the camp into a centre offering addiction treatment and mental health support.

BC Hydro noted the camp will remain open until later this fall, as construction is not entirely done on the hydroelectric plant.

The Site C dam became fully operational on August 8, when its sixth and final generator went into service.
