The BC Centre for Disease Control has confirmed eight new cases of measles across the province, increasing the total to 265.

Health officials have confirmed five new cases and one probable case in the Northern Health region. The BC CDC said there is now 193 cases in the region, but none are considered active.

Health officials have also confirmed three new measles cases in Fraser Health, adding that the region has four active cases.

The BC CDC noted that 87 percent of cases were not immunized prior to contracting the virus.

Medical experts continue to say the best way to protect yourself after exposure to measles is to get vaccinated with the MMR vaccine. You can contact your local health unit to schedule a vaccination appointment.
