A 32-kilometre stretch of Highway 97 South has re-opened after the Pine Pass was closed due to avalanche danger. The highway was closed Wednesday morning from the West Pine rest area to the Azu Campground.
According to Argo Road Maintenance, small avalanches had filled catchments at Link Creek.
Snow continued to fall Thursday morning with blowing snow and limited visibility.
The highway was closed for a second time Thursday from 11am to 1pm, as crews conducted avalanche control measures in the area.
Argo Road Maintenance is asking motorist to watch for slippery sections, drifting snow and to watch for road crews and give them room to work.
At time of the closure, Argo Road Maintenance said they didn’t have enough capacity to currently deal with avalanche deposits.
On Sunday, Environment Canada reported that 30 to 40 centimetres of snow was forecast for Highway 97 through Pine Pass, with near-zero visibility at times due to blowing snow.
A travel advisory said that driving through the pass will likely be treacherous. Weather can change quickly in Mountain passes, which can intensify already hazardous driving conditions.
There is no word on when the highway is expected to re-open. Motorists are being encouraged to check DriveBC for updates.
