An apartment building in Tumbler Ridge burned to the ground on Saturday. So far, there is no word on how fire began at the Spieker Apartments.
Firefighters were still on scene Monday mopping up hot spots from the fire. The building contained 51 units, all of which were destroyed.
Emergency Support Services (ESS) has been made available at the Tumbler Ridge Community Centre to provide support vouchers for hotel accommodations, food, and other essential needs.
Fire Chief Dustin Currey said, “There has been an outpouring of support from the community towards those who have lost their homes.”
Tumbler Ridge Fire and Rescue was assisted on-scene by the Dawson Creek Fire Department and a Mine Rescue Team from Conuma Resources.
The District of Tumbler Ridge is asking all residents to restrict water usage immediately, including indoor uses such as washing machines, dishwashers, and non-essential activities.
The district said, “That water reservoirs are extremely low due to the fire suppression efforts, and conservation is critical at this time.”
The multi-agency investigation led by Tumbler Ridge Fire and Rescue continues.
