The Alaska Highway is open after being closed in two seperate locations, due to wildfires burning out of control.
West of Fort Nelson, the highway will be open from 8pm Wednesday until 6 o’clock Thursday morning. There has been rotating openings and closures of the highway, due to the Summit Creek Wildfire that is burning in the area.
The highway was closed between the Highway 77 junction and Toad River for most of the day on Wednesday.
The Summit Creek fire is 81,045 hectares in size and is one of three ‘Wildfires of Note’ currently in BC.
South of Fort Nelson, the Alaska Highway near Buckinghorse River is also open Wednesday night.
The Pocket Knife Creek Wildfire is also one of three ‘Wildfires of Note’ and is the largest wildfire in British Columbia at 156,213 hectares in size.
Motorists are being asked to drive to the conditions, as there may be limited visibility due to smoke, obey traffic control crews and monitor DriveBC for the latest highway closures.
The next update on highway closures is expected Thursday at 6am.
