Alaska Highway closed west of Fort Nelson as ‘Wildfire of Note’ grows to 2,125 hectares

The Alaska Highway is closed between Steamboat and Toad River, 93 kilometres west of Fort Nelson.

The Summit Lake Wildfire has grown to 2,125 hectares in size. It’s burning out of control on the north side of the highway, 10 kilometres northeast of Summit Lake.

The blaze is currently displaying aggressive fire behavior and is growing in a southeasterly direction towards Highway 97, according to the BC Wildfire Service.

The fire is believed to be human caused and has become the second ‘Wildfire of Note’ in BC this year. Motorist are being reminded to check DriveBC for road closures.
