DAWSON CREEK, B.C. - Residents in Dawson Creek and surrounding areas are being advised to limit outdoor activities after Environment and Climate Change Canada issued an air quality warning for the region.
The warning is in effect as smoke continues to affect air quality across parts of northeastern British Columbia.
Poor air quality can pose health risks, particularly for seniors, young children, pregnant people and those with existing heart or lung conditions.
Health officials recommend residents reduce or reschedule strenuous outdoor activities if they experience symptoms such as coughing, throat irritation, headaches or shortness of breath.
People are also encouraged to keep windows and doors closed when possible and use air filtration systems if available.
Environment Canada says air quality conditions can change quickly depending on wind patterns and wildfire activity.
Residents are encouraged to monitor local forecasts and weather alerts for the latest information.
The warning comes as smoke from active wildfires in Southern BC continues to affect communities throughout the Peace Region and northern British Columbia.
Drivers are also being reminded that reduced visibility is possible in areas affected by heavy smoke, and should adjust their speed and allow for extra travel time if conditions deteriorate.
Environment Canada advises anyone experiencing severe symptoms, including difficulty breathing or chest pain, to seek medical attention immediately.
