89 Avenue in Fort St. John closed to begin second phase of construction

The City of Fort St. John has announced that starting on Monday, 89 Avenue between 81a Street and 86 Street will be local traffic only.

Crews are beginning construction on the second phase of the 89 Avenue project. This project will see underground utilities replaced, road reconstruction, sidewalks and streetlighting installed along 89 Avenue between 78a Street and 86 Street, over two phases – the first of which occurred in 2023.

Earlier this year, Council awarded this project phase to Knappett Industries of Fort St. John with a budget of $7.2 million. The project is funded through non-property tax revenues, such as the Peace River Agreement and water and sewer reserves.

Detour routes will be in place using 93 Avenue and 78a Street. The city is asking residents to obey all traffic control personnel and signage, and slow down near crews working to ensure everyone’s safety.

Additionally, BC Transit has adjusted Route 2 Southside and Route 4 Southeast, and temporary bus stops will be placed along the new route. To view a map of these changes, visit: https://www.bctransit.com/construction-impacts-to-transit-in-fort-st-john/
