The BC Centre for Disease Control has confirmed 18 new cases of measles across British Columbia, all of which have come from the Northern Health region.

The BC CDC said it brings the total of cases to 171 in the region, so far in 2025. Eight cases in Northern BC are currently considered to be active ones.

The provincial total now climbs to 233 for the year. Due to low vaccination rates in Northern BC, the region has seen 76 per cent of all measle cases in the province in 2025.

Medical experts say the best way to protect yourself after exposure to measles is to get vaccinated with the MMR vaccine. You can contact your local health unit to schedule a vaccination appointment.

With the new school year right around the corner, CJDC TV News reached out to both school districts in the Peace Region. We wanted to know what plans are in place and what parents need to know to help prevent a further spread of the measles. Numerous calls to School Districts 59 and 60 have not been returned.
