4.4 magnitude earthquake strikes northwest of Fort St. John

Some residents in Fort St. John woke up to an earthquake early Monday morning. The 4.4 magnitude quake struck at 6:23 am about 60 kilometers northwest of the city.

According to Earthquake Canada the tremor occurred at a depth of 5 kilometres. The agency said no damage has been reported and none is expected.

The quake happened in an area where there is oil and gas activity. So far, the BC Energy Regulator has not issued a statement about whether or not the earthquake was caused by fracking in the area.
