The Fort St. John RCMP are investigating the theft of approximately $250,000 worth of copper wire over the past few months.

Mounties say the theft happened at a rural gas site on Lower Cache Road near Highway 97 in Charlie Lake.

Police were made aware of the theft on February 4. However, they believe the copper was stolen on more than one occasion between November 26 and February 4.

“With thefts like these, suspects usually spend a considerable amount of time at the site,” police said.

BC Hydro issued an alert in December about a surge in copper thefts across the province.

Hydro officials said the consequences of these thefts are not only costly, but potentially fatal.

“We’re asking anyone who may have seen something suspicious or who has dashcam or surveillance footage of suspicious activity in the area to contact us,” Mounties said.

Anyone with information that could assist in the investigation is asked to contact the Fort St. John RCMP at 250-787-8100.
