A man is dead after what Mounties suspect was a hit-and-run on the side of Highway 43 in northwest Alberta early Tuesday morning.

RCMP were called to a pedestrian sitting on the highway west of Range Road 55 near Grande Prairie around 3:15 a.m. By the time officers arrived, the man had been struck and killed by a vehicle that hadn’t stayed at the scene.

Investigators are now looking for a semi-truck hauling a van trailer, which was seen travelling east on Highway 43 around the time of the death. Mounties say it stopped at the scene but left before police could get there, and roadblocks were not successful.

Clairmont RCMP want to speak to the driver of that semi-truck and are also seeking witnesses to the incident. Anyone in the area of Highway 43 near Range Road 55 between 3 a.m. and 3:30 a.m. on Tuesday who saw the pedestrian or has dashcam footage is asked to contact Mounties at 780-830-5112.
