An investigation is underway into an RCMP-involved shooting that took place Friday night in a rural area outside Grande Prairie.
Just before midnight, Grand Prairie RCMP say they located an erratic driver who fled when officers tried to stop it.
The vehicle eventually became stuck in the mud and when officers engaged the driver, he produced a gun.
During the confrontation, police say at least one officer fired their gun, hitting the driver.
Despite the efforts of officers and EMS, the suspect died on scene.
No officers were injured.
Grand Prairie RCMP issued a brief statement Saturday morning, saying that investigators with the RCMP were on hand along with members of the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT).
ASIRT has been directed to investigate the circumstances surrounding the actions of police.
There is no risk to the public.
