DAWSON CREEK -- Families in Peace River South will now have access to more child care spaces.

School District 59 has announced the creation of 74 new spaces in Dawson Creek and Tumbler Ridge.

The District has secured $7.95 million in federal and provincial funding through the ChildCareBC New Space fund for the creation of new centres.

A total of 12 spaces will be added in both Dawson Creek and Tumbler Ridge for children under 36 months, while an additional 25 spaces will support each of the communities for children three years of age and older.

“We are committed to providing affordable, accessible, inclusive and high-quality child care to communities across the country, ensuring all children have the best possible start in life,” said Federal Minister of Families, Children and Social Development Jenna Sudds.

MLA for Peace River South Mike Bernier says the child care spaces are needed to attract families to the region.

“The need for affordable and available child care is paramount in our communities as we work to recruit professionals and their families to our region, as well as supporting those who have been desperately looking for this opportunity,” said Bernier.

Design plans are already underway, with the spaces being fully accessible and fitted with office space, a full kitchen, washroom and an outdoor learning space.

The centres housing the spaces are expected to be completed by April of 2026.
