DAWSON CREEK -- The City of Dawson Creek has activated cooling centres as a heat wave continues to settle over the Peace Region.
The Nawican Shelter began operating as a reprieve from elevated temperatures on July 10, 2024, and will be open with 8:00 a.m. to midnight seven days a week.
The centre will remain open until July 22nd, 2024.
The air-conditioned shelter will have space to accommodate 30 people with water, cool drinks, and snacks in an effort to protect vulnerable residents.
A heat warning issued by Environment Canada remains in effect for the South Peace region, with the weather centre warning of daytime highs in the low 30s and overnight lows in the mid teens set to persist through the rest of the week.
The shelter is located at 1401 102 Ave in Dawson Creek.
Those interested in volunteering or donating to the cooling shelter are asked to call (778) 843-1722.
On 17th Street, the Nawican Bergeron Youth and Culture Centre will also host a cooling centre with workshops and events.
In Fort St. John, residents can take a break at the Pomeroy Sport Centre, The North Peace Cultural Society, North Peace Leisure Pool, and shopping centres amid the extreme heat.
The city confirming the air-conditioned facilities will be open during regular business hours.
While in Fort Nelson, a cooling centre has opened at the Northern Rockies Regional Recreation Centre located off the Old Alska Highway.
"We welcome everyone to come and stay cool, hydrated, and safe," said the municipality in a social media post.
The centre will be open daily until 9:00 p.m.
