DAWSON CREEK -- A BC Highway Patrol officer was taken to hospital Wednesday after being hit by a semi on highway 97.

Police say an officer was driving on the Alaska Highway near 212 Road when he witnessed a traffic violation in progress.

The Mountie attempted a u-turn but his cruiser became stuck in the middle of the road, due to what police believe was a faulty gear shift.

An on-coming semi spotted the vehicle and slammed on its brakes. The semi couldn’t come to a complete stop and broadsided the Ford Explorer.

The officer was taken to hospital and was treated for minor injuries. The driver of the semi was un-injured.

Highway 97 was closed in both directions while investigators were on-scene.
