FORT ST. JOHN -- The B.C. government has extended most of the COVID-19 restrictions imposed in late December to combat the spread of Omicron.

Provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry said the high levels of COVID-19 transmission is still occurring across BC, as well as record numbers of test-positive patients in hospital.

Henry says the majority of restrictions put in place in December will remain in effect, including the closure of bars and nightclubs and 50 per cent capacity limits on restaurants, theatres and stadiums.

The restrictions will also limit the size of household gatherings, ban indoor events such as weddings receptions and strictly regulate the behaviour of diners in restaurants.

BC’s top doctor says those restrictions are still necessary due to the high rates of transmission of COVID-19 and the number of people needing hospital care.

Henry says the bulk of the current measures will remain in place until February 16, at the earliest.
