DAWSON CREEK -- Dawson Creek students will return to classes on September 4th, and parents have noticed their bills adding up.

According to surveys done by NerdWallet Canada, this year's average back-to-school spend for back-to-school shopping is $743, which is up 41.8 per cent from 2023. Surveys also concluded that 23 per cent of Canadians who are back-to-school shopping plan on purchasing fewer back-to-school supplies this year due to inflation.

“Consumers are looking for any way possible to save money, yet still provide their children with what they need for back to school,” says Retail Analyst, Bruce Winder.

In Dawson Creek, there are savings that can be found. CJDC compared current prices at the local Walmart and Dollarama. Here are some school supply comparisons that were found:

  • 1.5“ Three-ring binder

           Walmart: $5.97

           Dollarama: $4

  • Pack of 12 wooden pencils

           Walmart: $3.43

           Dollarama: $2

  • 10.5 x 8“ 200 page notebook

           Walmart: $2.46

           Dollarama: $2.75

Statistics Canada is reporting that the price of textbooks and supplies has gone up 3.9 per cent since 2023. However, children’s clothing is down 7.7 per cent compared to last year. Household paper supplies have also decreased 4.4 per cent.

Those who are looking for discounted items have different options, such as waiting for a sale, or couponing. Winder brings up Facebook Marketplace and thrifting as other options to help save money.

“You’re helping the environment, by giving the product a second or third life, and you’re also saving money,” says Winder.
