DAWSON CREEK -- A fire at an apartment complex in Dawson Creek forced an evacuation of the building Thursday.

The fire broke out in a third story unit around 5:30 Thursday evening, at the Northview Apartment building on 13th Street.

When firefighters arrived on scene, heavy smoke and flames could be seen coming from the third story apartment.

Crews quickly knocked down flames on the balcony while residents were being evacuated.

The fire was also burning inside the bedroom of the unit. The suite was heavily damaged but firefighters managed to contain the damage to the one apartment.

Residents first sheltered in place at the fire station, then a few blocks away at the Nawican Centre. They were allowed backed in the building by 8 pm.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

While crews were at the scene, they were called to a grassfire near Bear Mountain. A man was burning grass on his property during a Category 3 Open Burn Ban.

Chief Marcel Capelle with the Dawson Creek Fire Department is reminding the public that outdoor burning is prohibited in Northeast BC.
