CHETWYND -- While a handful of nurses may soon be able to return to work after vaccination mandates were rescinded, growing calls for an overall of B.C.'s health-care system continue.

Two health-care rallies put on by MLA Mike Bernier were held in the Peace Region July 25th.

"This problem is only getting worse unless we start changing the trajectory,” said Bernier at the rally.

Dozens of people showing up in Chetwynd and Dawson Creek, with both the MLA and residents demanding action from Health Minister Adrian Dix to do more to address hospital diversions, issues of staffing shortages, and long specialist waitlists in the region.

“People shouldn't have to find when they show up at a hospital with their child who might have a broken arm that the hospital is closed and drive to Fort St. John," said the MLA for Peace River South.

There has been 20 emergency department closures in Chetwynd so far this year.

It has forced patients to travel to other Peace Region hospitals that are facing their own diversions on some occasions at the same time.

On Tuesday, Peace River North MLA Dan Davies will lead the ‘Fort St. John Rally for Better Healthcare'.

Dignitaries including Lilia Hansen and the mayors of Hudson’s Hope and Fort Nelson are set to be in attendance.
