DAWSON CREEK -- A man is in custody after an armed standoff with Dawson Creek RCMP ended peacefully.

Police were called to a residence near Old Edmonton Highway and Highway 2 shortly after 5:00 p.m. Tuesday.

Mounties received a report of a suicidal man who had barricaded himself inside his garage.

According to RCMP, before police arrived the man was yielding a firearm and fired a bullet through the roof of the garage.

The Old Edmonton Highway was closed as a two hour negotiation between the RCMP and the man unfolded.

Police telling CJDC-TV News that the man was suffering from a mental health crisis.

After a successful negotiation, the man was arrested without incident and admitted to hospital for evaluation.

RCMP say there is no threat to public safety and residents who left the area during the standoff are safe to return home.
