HUDSON'S HOPE -- As summer begins the wind down, Hudson's Hope RCMP are reminding residents that bears are not our friends.

RCMP say with the transition of seasons and ripening of fruit trees bear activity in the district is expected to increase.

Mounties are asking residents to avoid of fine of up to $230 by picking up fallen apples and fruit in their yards.

“It will be our responsibility as a community as a whole, to work together to keep both bears and residents safe during these upcoming months,” wrote Detachment Commander Cpl. Erich Schmidt in August’s Police Report.

Wildlife Act tickets for attracting dangerous wildlife onto your property were established by the district in March.

In August of 2023, Schmidt said residents were not complying with requests to remove fruit trees after four bears had to be euthanized.

This led to consultations with Brad Lacey of B.C. Conservation Services, who says he has worked with other municipalities on similar issues. Lacey said that by enhancing bylaws it will compel residents to better maintain their properties, according to the report presented to council.

Anyone who requires assistance with trees due to physical inability can contact the detachment for assistance.
