FORT NELSON -- Highway 77 remains closed after an out control wildfire crossed the roadway yesterday.

Drive BC said all parts of highway have been shut down with trees and other debris lying in the road.

Currently, there isn’t a direct route to the Northwest Territories and no date when the highway will reopen.

Bernice Gargan is a school teacher at Fort Simpson in the Northwest Territories. She said she got stuck in Fort Nelson, trying to make her way home.

The only other route to Fort Simpson is nearly 11 hours long.

Residents are being told to avoid the area.

The wildfire is currently 33,159 hectares in size and burning out of control.

More information on the closure can be found on the Drive BC website.
