FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. --  A Fort St. John librarian and teacher organizing what she’s calling a community closet.

Joanne Bennett’s doing it so high school graduates who can’t afford to buy gowns and suits can still dress to impress this graduation season. With her youngest daughter graduating from North Peace Secondary School, she’s helping organize the festivities like prom.

But the connection runs deeper for Bennett who’s watched the students grow up working at Dr. Kearny Middle School. “I’ve taught the kids, so let’s see them go off with a bang,” she said.

There are over 30 dresses in the Dr. Kearny basement awaiting night to remember. But with less than 10 suits available, Bennett is particularly hoping for more men’s wear donations.

"The suit side is important to us because what guy doesn’t need a pair of dress pants, nice shirt and a tie.” While thanking everyone who’s donated so far, Bennett says some have even offered to pitch in by purchasing a fitted outfit for students.

Students will have the option to keep the prom apparel for future occasions or donate it back to the community closet for future years. Anyone interested in donating can email jbennett@prn.bc.ca or call Dr. Kearny at 250 785-8378.
