FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. -- Amid skyrocketing inflation, food banks around the Peace Region are facing an increase in demand.

The Fort St. John Salvation Army says their shelves are quite bare, but Safeway shoppers can help the food bank stock up. The Christmas in July food drive is happening at the grocery store until 5 PM Wednesday.

Salvation Army Summer Student Emily Cui is happy to accept donations to alleviate food insecurity outside of the typical season for giving.

“You tend to think about giving back to the community a lot in December so that everyone can have a great Christmas and be with their family and friends, but it’s really an issue all year round.” Cui said.

The team hopes to fill their van on site with items in need like canned protein, grains and toiletries.
